In 1975, the government created a public college called the National Teacher Training College (NTTC). This new college replaced three denominational colleges which were now given representation in the NTTC Board of Governors. The NTTC was thus made a department of the Ministry of Education which “therefore operated under the rules and regulations of the civil service”.

Between 1994 and 2002, certificate programmes were replaced by diploma programmes. On 31 July 2002, the College was granted autonomy and renamed Lesotho College of Education.
