The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) Regional Office for Southern Africa (UNESCO ROSA), in collaboration with the Eswatini Higher Education Council (ESHEC) and the Council on Higher Education (CHE) of Lesotho, hosted a crucial Capacity Building Workshop on Quality Assurance in Higher Education from October 21-22, 2025, in Eswatini.
This joint initiative is part of a broader Southern African Development Corporation (SADC)-wide series aimed at strengthening quality assurance systems across the region, building on previous workshops in Zimbabwe (2024) and Zambia (2025).
Key Objectives & Outcomes:
The primary goal was to enhance the capabilities of quality assurance staff and stakeholders in both countries to foster a culture of continuous improvement and academic excellence. The workshop focused on:
- Strengthening institutional capacity for internal and external quality assurance mechanisms.
- Enhancing the adoption of regional and international frameworks, such as the Addis Convention.
- Fostering alignment of quality assurance approaches to advance the mutual recognition of qualifications and regional harmonization within SADC.
Training modules covered key areas including Quality Assurance in Curriculum Design, Assessment Methods, and Digital Transformation. The event served as a critical platform for cross-country networking, peer learning, and benchmarking between universities and quality regulatory bodies from both Eswatini and Lesotho
