Stakeholders Validate National Framework for Micro-credentials
The Council on Higher Education (CHE) in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Training through Tertiary Department and TVD is in the process of developing a National Framework for Microcredentials. The initiative is supported by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL). A workshop was held for one day on 31st August 2026 to validate a draft Framework for Micro-credentials at Mpilo Hotel in Maseru. This framework was developed through a highly consultative process which started in June this year. The validation workshop brought together representatives from Government Ministries, Higher Education Institutions, Technical and Vocational Training Institutions, industry representatives and professional bodies to review and validate the draft framework.
The workshop was very well attended and representatives contributed meaningfully towards its refinement, and they ultimately validated it. Now that the framework has been validated it will be processed for approval by the relevant authorities. Once it has been approved it will be implemented by various providers including higher education institutions, TVET institutions and companies interested in offering industry-based microcredentials. Its implementation will go a long way towards improving people’s skills in different sectors of the economy through short learning programmes that are credit-bearing and therefore, attached to the Lesotho Qualifications Framework. One of the advantages of microcredetials is that they are portable meaning that they can be recognised locally in the Kingdom and in other countries. They can also be stackable which means that they can be used for entry into a full programme.
